Mythology

Tanah Lot is one of the most important directional temples in Bali. The temple is located on a small island rock outcrop just offshore. It is said to have been founded by a revered 16th century Hindu priest called Danghyang Nirartha of the Majapahit Kingdom in East Java. Purah Tanah Lot forms an important element of Balinese spirituality and mythology. It is said that when Nirartha found the little island he spent the night on it and told local fishermen that they should build a shrine as he believed the area to be holy. Tanah Lot is dedicated to Dewa Baruna or Bhatara Segara or, the god of the sea.

While You Are There

The site has vast gardens to stroll around and take in the absolutely stunning views.  To reach the actual temple of Tanah Lot, you will need to cross at low tide. On its northern side stand two other Balinese temples built on an overhanging cliff which connects the islet to the shore. Underneath the bridge formation are caves that are inhabited by sea snakes, believed to be the earthly guardians of the temples.

Following are the corresponding dates for future anniversaries at Tanah Lot

The very best time of the year to visit Tanah Lot is during Odalan, celebrated every 210 days, for the Galungan and Kuningan festivities. These special and revered days are called Buddha Cemeng Langkir. On any of these two days you will see many Balinese families gracefully making their way to to the holy places to make their offerings and to make prayers.
